Franklin Co. wins 4th sheep-to-shawl title

By Blake Jackson

For the fourth year running, the Franklin County team "Friends Through Fiber" has emerged as the champion of the Pennsylvania Farm Show's Sheep-to-Shawl competition! This year's theme, "wearable art," perfectly captured the team's creative vision, transforming the fleece of Tamjani, a gentle Cormo Corriedale cross, into a stunning shawl in just 2½ hours.

The atmosphere at the Small Arena crackled with excitement as Dan Dailey expertly shorn Tamjani, his fleece soon becoming the canvas for a masterpiece. The Friends worked in seamless harmony, carding, spinning, and weaving the fibers into a magnificent 22-inch wide, 78-inch-long shawl adorned with 5-inch fringes. Each step was a testament to their teamwork and dedication, with no time to waste.

Their efforts culminated in a breathtaking piece, ultimately fetching a whopping $1,700 at auction! The competition's intensity was undeniable, with seven teams vying for the top spot. "Time Warp" from Montour County took second place with their shawl selling for $1,000, while other talented teams like "Spin City" and "Woven Together" showcased their unique skillsets.

The judging panel, comprised of renowned fiber artists Linda Brown, Margaret Snow, and Susan Kessler Simpson, meticulously assessed each shawl, evaluating its size, yarn quality, theme adherence, and overall artistic merit. Simpson, a seasoned competition judge, remarked on the closeness of this year's event, adding that the judges not only assess but also offer friendly advice and encouragement.

This Sheep-to-Shawl competition isn't just about winning; it's a celebration of collaboration, creativity, and the transformative power of wool. Friends Through Fiber have proven that this versatile fiber can be both practical and exquisite, weaving together tradition and innovation in every stitch. Their victory is a testament to their talent, teamwork, and passion for the art of fiber.
