The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture distributed over $2 million in grants to fight hunger. The TEFAP Reach and Resiliency Grants will be used by 57 food banks, pantries, shelters, and soup kitchens across the state.
The grants aim to improve access to healthy food for Pennsylvanians facing food insecurity. Funded projects include mobile food pantries to reach isolated communities, expanded storage for fresh produce, and delivery vehicles to serve those with transportation barriers.
This is the second round of TEFAP grants, following a $1.6 million allocation in September 2023 to 39 organizations. Over 1.5 million Pennsylvanians experience food insecurity according to Feeding America.
The Shapiro Administration is taking action against hunger. They implemented free breakfast programs for all public schools and free lunch for qualifying students in 2023-24. They have also allocated funds to connect surplus farm products to food banks and support access to fresh produce for low-income families.
