Dairy Experts Share Winter Tips for Youngstock Growth

Dairy Experts Share Winter Tips for Youngstock Growth

By Blake Jackson

The Center for Dairy Excellence continues its monthly “All Things Dairy” conference calls, providing a platform for organizations and industry partners to share updates, resources, programs, and upcoming events relevant to the dairy community. The next call is scheduled for Wednesday, October 8, at 1 p.m. EST.

Speakers from Penn State Extension and the PA Department of Agriculture will cover a range of topics, including strategies to maintain average daily gain in youngstock during winter, tips for proper ventilation while controlling moisture in animal housing, and updates on HPAI and New World Screwworm.

“As we head into the fall and winter months, we thought it was a good time to brush up on best practices for achieving optimal growth of your youngstock during the colder months," said Valerie Mason-Faith, Risk Education Manager at the Center for Dairy Excellence.

"Our speakers also plan to share helpful information about controlling moisture and optimizing ventilation along with updates on biosecurity threats. We hope you can join us for our next conference call.”

During the call, participants will receive updates on:

  • HPAI and New World Screwworm detections: Dr. Erin Luley from the PA Department of Agriculture will discuss new biosecurity threats, including an HPAI detection in Nebraska dairy cattle and a New World Screwworm case near the U.S.-Mexico border.
  • Maintaining average daily gain in winter: Jim Lawhead of Penn State Extension will explain how to ensure youngstock meet nutritional requirements without compromising growth.
  • Ventilation and moisture control: John Tyson of Penn State Extension will cover techniques for managing moisture in barns to reduce respiratory illness in calves, heifers, and cows.

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask panelists questions in real time.
