Apply now - dairy innovation grants for Pennsylvania farmers

By Blake Jackson

Dairy farmers in Pennsylvania have a new opportunity to invest in innovative technologies thanks to the Dairy Innovation Grants program offered by the Center for Dairy Excellence.

This program leverages funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's Ag Innovation Fund to support technological advancements on dairy farms.

“Investing in new technology on PA dairy farms is exciting and can really boost efficiency and production. But it can be a huge expense for most dairy farm families,” said Melissa Anderson, Programs and Operations Manager at the Center for Dairy Excellence. “If our application is accepted, these Dairy Innovation Grants could help ease upfront costs and make it possible for dairy producers to pursue innovative technology that can drive their operations forward.”

The program offers matching grants of up to $25,000, covering up to 50% of the total project cost, with a maximum project budget of $50,000. The funds are provided as reimbursements after project completion.

Eligible farms must be located in Pennsylvania, have anticipated annual sales exceeding $2,000, and maintain a minimum of 35 mature dairy cows or 70 mature dairy goats.

Additionally, they must demonstrate commitment to responsible practices through a conservation plan, manure management plan, and participation in animal care programs like National FARM.

The grant program focuses on technology investments that improve efficiency and data collection across various farm operations. Examples include:

  • Milking parlor automation for improved data collection and efficiency
  • Feeding system automation for better monitoring of feed rations and inventory
  • Activity monitoring systems for enhanced herd health and reproduction
  • Automated ventilation and cow cooling systems using temperature-controlled fans, misters, and curtains

Construction of new facilities is not covered by the grant program.

Interested dairy farmers can submit pre-applications by November 1st, 2024. Successful applicants will be notified in November, but final funding approval depends on the Center for Dairy Excellence's overall application to the Pennsylvania Ag Innovation Fund, with awardees announced in January 2025.

For more information and to submit a pre-application, visit the Center for Dairy Excellence website at www.centerfordairyexcellence.org/dairy-innovation-grants.
