Dale and Tracie Brockhoff and daughter Sarah, of Brockwood Belgians in Dayton, Armstrong County, earned Grand Champion honors at the Draft Horse Hitch competition during the 102nd Pennsylvania Farm Show.

Brockwood Belgians placed first in six-horse hitch, four-horse hitch, unicorn hitch, and team hitch, tallying enough wins to receive the purple banner. Reserve Grand Champion was Don Sherwood of Sherwood Groves Farm, Tunkhannock, Wyoming Co.

Judge Joe Mulligan, Earlville, N.Y., evaluated each team and its driver for action, movement, performance, consistency, and unity. The Pennsylvania Farm Show hosts multiple draft horse competitions throughout the week, including the hitch classes, cart classes, halter classes, pleasure classes, and horse pulls.

Members of the Pennsylvania Draft Horse and Mule Association stepped off their wagons in support of the induction of the late Senator Michael Waugh into the Pennsylvania Draft Horse Hall of Fame. A draft horse promoter and hitch driver, Senator Waugh continually promoted heavy horse activities in innovative ways, with the gentle giants of his own Glen Ridge Farm serving as his inspiration. As a commissioner for the Pennsylvania Farm Show for 15 years, he helped to secure funding to expand the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and build today's Equine Barn and Equine Arena. Also as a state senator, he helped to protect Pennsylvania's equine operations through the creation and passage of the 2006 Equine Activities Liability Act.

"From co-sponsoring his hometown York Fair hitch show to competing at the state level, and advocating for agriculture in the Pennsylvania Capitol to helming the complex itself, Senator Michael Waugh lived out his commitment to our industry and to Pennsylvania's draft horse owners and aficionados," said Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding, who presented Senator Waugh's wife Wanda with the recognition. "May all supporters of agricultural activities be inspired by his life, work, and legacy."

Anna Ruby, Union Bridge, Md., was crowned the 2018 Pennsylvania Draft Horse and Mule Association Youth Representative. Ruby attends James Madison High School online as she pursues her passion of training horses.
