Report Details State Park, Forest Maintenance Needs
Pennsylvania Ag Connection - 02/07/2019

A comprehensive study that began in 2017 by the Pennsylvania Parks & Forest Foundation (PPFF) has resulted in a report that details the maintenance needs in Pennsylvania state parks and forests. The state parks and forests, which host more than 40 million visitors a year, contain:

- 3,000 miles of roadways

- 4,800 buildings

- 860 vehicular bridges

- 1,470 miles of hiking trails

- 131 dams

- 70 sewage treatment plants

- 180 boat ramps

- 56 swimming beaches

- 30,000 picnic tables

The maintenance backlog has existed since the 1990s; however, PPFF says recent extreme weather and invasive species have made the issue worse.

The report -- available at paparksandforests.org/initiatives/infrastructurestudy/ -- finds that funding for infrastructure, staffing, and materials has continually gone down during the last decade. To combat this, it calls for sustainable funding for repairs and infrastructure.
