3 Pennsylvania Farm Women Receive Flora Black Scholarships


The Society of Farm Women of Pennsylvania has announced the 2023 recipients of the Flora Black Scholarship. The three recipients are Lillian Hetrick, Sarah Berger, and Haley Stertzel, all from Berks County.

Lillian Hetrick is the daughter of Allen and Audrey Hetrick of Oley. She is a 2023 graduate of Oley Valley High School and will be studying food science at Penn State's main campus. Lillian is a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church and has worked for four years at a local dairy farm. She is also an active member of FFA, Envirothon, and her church youth group.

Sarah Berger is the daughter of Glenn and Heidi Berger of Oley. She will be starting her second year at Penn State's Berks campus, majoring in animal science with a concentration in business management. Sarah is a member of 4-H, Oley Valley FFA Alumni Chapter, and Fleetwood Grange. She is also an active member of Salem United Church of Christ.

Haley Stertzel is the daughter of Terry and Kelly Stertzel of Bethel. She is a 2023 graduate of Hamburg High School and will be attending Delaware Valley University, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, majoring in animal science. Haley's goal is to become a veterinarian. She is an active member of her high school's Wilderness Club, Ag Science Club, and cross country team. She also volunteers with her local fire company, fosters stray kittens, and is an award-winning dog trainer and showman.

The Flora Black Scholarship is awarded to students who are the child, grandchild, or great-grandchild of a member of the Society of Farm Women of Pennsylvania. The scholarships are funded by the proceeds of the society's Farm Women cookbooks.

The Society of Farm Women of Pennsylvania is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1914 in Somerset County. The society's mission is to promote the interests of farm women and their families. The society provides scholarships, educational programs, and other resources to support farm women and their families.
