Milkshake Madness Demonstrates that Everything Goes with Milk
Pennsylvania Ag Connection - 09/20/2017

Bananas, Nutella, and of course, ice cream and milk were key ingredients in the winning shake during the annual Milkshake Madness celebrity milkshake-making competition at the All-American Dairy Show Tuesday at the Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg.

Harrisburg-area media celebrities and dairy industry luminaries vied for culinary bragging rights in the timed competition, combining Turkey Hill ice cream and milk products with ingredients ranging from cookies and candy to fresh fruit and nuts.

Contestants had 15 minutes to plan and execute their milkshakes, which were judged for creativity, presentation, texture and overall flavor. The panel of judges included Farm Show Executive Director Sharon Altland, Farm Show Assistant Director Heidi Svonavec, Pennsylvania Jersey Princess Lane Kummer of Butler County, and junior exhibitor Brinkley Burdette of Franklin County.

PennLive food writer Sue Gleiter led her teammates -- cattle exhibitor Amy Werner of Nebraska and Pennsylvania Alternate Dairy Princess Brittany Haag of Mohrsville, Berks Co. -- to victory. Their creation Sweet Nutcracker won the judges over with the pleasing taste, texture and presentation, including details such as a Nutella-drizzled margarita glass and banana slices as garnish. French vanilla base, walnuts, banana caramel drizzle garnished with banana slices and walnuts.

"All the credit goes to Brittany," said captain Gleiter. "She knew Nutella should be the base ingredient and we built a great shake from there."

Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and his teammates -- Brinton Cordell of Franklin Co.; Nolan Kummer of Butler Co.; and Hannah Riser of Adams Co. -- whipped up a tasty concoction of chocolate ice cream, raspberries, blueberries, Reese's Pieces, chocolate chips and peanut butter, topped with whipped cream, cookie crumbs, and a maraschino cherry. They dubbed it "P-Diddy All-American," in honor of Brinton's Holstein calf.

ABC 27 news anchor Valerie Pritchett led teammates -- dairy exhibitor Wyatt Cordell and PA Dairy Princess Halee Wasson -- in creating their "Mint-stein," using mint Oreos and other mint and chocolate toppings to help create a mint version of a black-and-white "Holstein" shake.

CBS 21 reporter Lara Greenberg captained a team including exhibitor Alex Coppersmith of Ohio and Pennsylvania Deputy Agriculture Secretary Greg Hostetter, creating a chocolate surprise.

Winning team members received gift baskets, and all competitors received an array of gifts from American Dairy Association Northeast. Event sponsor Turkey Hill provided the ice cream.
