Pennsylvania Hog Inventory Up 16 Percent

Pennsylvania inventory of all hogs and pigs on June 1, 2020 was 1.42 million head. This was up 16 percent from June 1, 2019, and up 4.4 percent from March 1, 2020, according to King Whetstone, director of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northeastern Region.

Breeding inventory, at 150 thousand head, was up 25 percent from June 1, 2019, and the same as the previous quarter.

Market hog inventory, at 1.27 million head, was up 15 percent from last year, and up 5 percent from previous quarter.

The March-May 2020 pig crop, at 633 thousand head, was up 6 percent from 2019. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 57 thousand head, up 6 percent from 2019. The average pigs saved per litter was 11.1 for the March-May period, the same pig per litter as the previous year.
