It's an Angora Palooza at 102nd PA Farm Show
Pennsylvania Ag Connection - 01/16/2018
The Angora Palooza returned to the 102nd Pennsylvania Farm Show for a third year. This event echoed the popular "Fleece-to-Shawl" competition and auction. Instead of sheep, competitors used fur from angora rabbits.
Teams were judged on the weaving design, the looming precision, and spinning uniformity of the scarf. Additionally, the teams were required to create a two-ply yarn, pulling the excess fiber off of their assigned rabbits. In the end, each scarf should be relative to
that of their practice scarf, which was displayed during the event. All the scarves must be at least 10 inches wide and a minimum of 70 inches in length with a 5-inch fringe on both ends. Following the competition, each one of the scarves made in the contest was
auctioned off.
The four teams participating in the event included 4-H members and their families from Dauphin County. Participants decided as a group to focus on the four pillars of the American Rabbit Breeders Association. Each team represented one of the pillars of the
association's key points -- fancy, fun, fur, and food.
The judges for this event were Kathy Kenworthy of Berks Co. and Robin Wolfe of Lebanon Co., both of whom are very experienced in the fiber industry.
