Ag Secretary's Team Udderly Successful in Milking Contest
Pennsylvania Ag Connection - 01/16/2019

Taking matters into both hands, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding led his team to victory in the Celebrity Cow Milking Contest at the 103rd Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.

Four teams of five media personalities, agricultural royalty, cabinet members and legislators came together for a chance to experience the dairy industry up close, from the producers to the actual animals they raise.

Redding's milking prowess, using a two-handed technique as the anchor of his team, helped yield the team 1.5 pounds of milk from a Holstein cow. His team included Representative John Lawrence, Representative Pam DeLissio, Valerie Pritchett of ABC 27, and Representative Steve Malagari. The Holstein, Angry, is owned by Delaware Valley University.

Two teams tied for second and third place both milking 0.7 pounds of milk.

One team was led by Senator Elder Vogel, milking 0.7 pounds of milk from a Red and White cow. Team members included Pennsylvania Dairy Princess Brooke Emery; Secretary of the Department of Human Services Teresa Miller; wife of Senator Sharif Street, April Street. The Red and White, named Britt, is owned by Hostetter Dairy in Somerset Co.

Right behind, the next team was led by Deputy Secretary of Policy and Planning for Governor Wolf, Erin Smith Wachter, milking 0.7 pounds of milk from an Ayrshire cow. Team members included Representative Danielle Friel-Otten, Rob Barley of the Milk Marketing Board, Representative Rob Murt, and Representative Jordan Harris. The Ayrshire, Marissa, is owned by Dreamnol Ayrshires of Chester Co.

The fourth-place team was led by Matt Barcaro of News 8 milking 0.6 pounds of milk from a Guernsey cow. Team members included Director of Produce and Floral at Giant Food Stores, Chris Keetch; Representative Mark Gillen; CEO of Feeding America Claire Babineaux-Fontenot; and Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Karns Quality Foods, Andrea Karns. The Guernsey, named Summer, is owned by Shultz Cattle Company of York Co.
