Pennsylvania Corn and Soybean Production Down

Pennsylvania corn growers produced 138 million bushels, down 15% from 2019, according to King Whetstone, director of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Northeastern Regional Field Office. The average yield in Pennsylvania is estimated at 138.0 bushels per acre, 15.0 bushels below the 2019 average yield of 153.0 bushels per acre. Area harvested for grain, at 1.00 million acres, is down 6% from 2019.

Corn for silage production in 2020 is estimated at a record high 9.22 million tons, up 22% from 2019. The average yield is estimated at 19.0 tons per acre, down 1.0 ton from last year's yield. Harvested area, at 485,000 acres, is up 28% from last year.

Soybean production in 2020 totaled 29.0 million bushels, down 3% from last year. Soybean yield is estimated at 46.0 bushels per acre, down 3.0 bushels from 2019. Harvested area in 2020, at 630,000, is up 3% from last year.

Pennsylvania tobacco production for 2020 is estimated at 13.4 million pounds, down 6% from last year. Growers harvested 5.500 acres, down 4% from a year ago. Yield per acre averaged 2,444 pounds per acre, down 65 pounds per acre from 2019.

Also released today were the Winter Wheat Seedings and Grain Stocks reports. The Winter Wheat Seedings report is the first indicator of this year's winter wheat acreage. Planted area for harvest in 2021 is estimated at 240 thousand acres, up 2% from 2020 and up 33% from 2019.

The estimates in the report were based primarily on surveys conducted the first two weeks of December.
