Plan: Watershed-Scale Stream Restoration, Flood Recovery
Pennsylvania Ag Connection - 03/20/2019

Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) North-central Regional Director Marcus Kohl Tuesday joined other state, federal, county, and non-profit agencies at an open house to share information about working in streams impacted by flooding and erosion and discuss how Restore PA, the $4.5 billion bipartisan aggressive infrastructure plan, would help communities dealing with the aftermath of flooding.

"Our region needs the Restore Pennsylvania plan if we are ever to properly address critical flood control infrastructure needs, especially the large-scale restoration work on flood-impacted streams that our communities desperately need to avoid future repetitive losses," said Kohl.

Dozens of residents attending the open house spoke one-on-one with DEP and eight other participating agencies about their stream work and flooding questions and viewed educational displays and demonstrations. Copies of the booklet "Guidelines for Maintaining Streams in Your Community" were provided to assist landowners and municipal officials seeking to work in streams.

The Clean Water Institute of Lycoming College co-sponsored the open house. Also participating in the event were the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, PennDOT, Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy, Lycoming County Conservation District, and the Lycoming County Department of Planning and Community Development's Hazard Mitigation Division.

Restore Pennsylvania is a statewide plan to aggressively address the commonwealth's vital infrastructure needs. Funded through a commonsense severance tax, Restore Pennsylvania is the only plan that will help make Pennsylvania a leader in the 21st century.
