Pennsylvania Red Meat Production Up 6 Percent

Commercial red meat production for Pennsylvania totaled 124.8 million pounds in January, up 6 percent from the 118.0 million pounds produced in January 2016.
Cattle slaughter totaled 88.6 thousand head, up 14 percent from January 2016. The average live weight was down 2 pounds from the previous year, at 1,247.
Calf slaughter totaled 7,900 thousand head, up 16 percent from January 2015. The average live weight was down 11 pounds from last year, at 425 pounds.
Hog slaughter totaled 282.1 thousand head, up 1 percent from January 2016. The average live weight was down 7 pounds from the previous year, at 274 pounds.
Sheep slaughter totaled 5.9 thousand head, 28 percent above last year. The average live weight was 107 pounds, up 1 pound from January a year ago.
