Pennsylvania Farmers Prepare for Onset of Winter

According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in Pennsylvania, there were 4.5 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday. Topsoil moisture supplies were 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 89 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 90 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus.

Pasture conditions ranged from 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 42 percent fair, 43 percent good, and 9 percent excellent.

Reporters are from Extension Service (Ext), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Farm Service Agency (FSA), Conservation District (CD), farmers, commodity specialists, or other knowledgeable individuals.

ADAMS/FRANKLIN counties, Thomas Kerr: Apples are finished. Many nights below freezing ended the harvest.

BRADFORD County, Casey Guindon: Corn and soybean harvest is well underway throughout the county. Manure spreading and lime application have been common as producers prepare for the onset of winter in the coming weeks.

CENTRE County, Dick A. Decker: Corn and soybean harvest continued during the week.

JUNIATA/SNYDER counties, William C. Sheaffer: The fall harvest season is near completion. A very hard freeze early in the week definitely put an end to the growing season. Hope everyone will have a Happy Thanksgiving.
