Pennsylvania 4-H Member Tops in Stockman's Competition
Pennsylvania Ag Connection - 10/10/2018

Jocelynn Whitsel of Huntingdon County Pennsylvania 4-H captured the top individual honor at the 2018 Stockman's Contest at the 2018 Keystone International Livestock Exposition in Harrisburg. Whitsel was also on the team that placed second overall.

Bedford County FFA Team A took home first overall team honors. Team members included Luke Brambley, Samantha Vanpelt, Kylee Cessna, and Emily O'Brien.

Youth competed in 12 classes, testing their knowledge of livestock, wool and meat judging, quality assurance and equipment identification, and management. To prepare for the contest, youth spent time in and outside of the classroom learning the cuts of meat from cattle, sheep and swine; sharpening their knowledge of equipment; and placing classes of livestock. Youth were also encouraged to keep up with current events in production agriculture.

The top five contestants with the highest individual scores were interviewed by industry experts about current events in the sheep, beef, and swine industries to determine the Keystone Junior Stockman of the Year.

The event was sponsored by the Pennsylvania Livestock Association and South-Central PA Cattleman's Association.
