Pennsylvania Hog Inventory Up 14 Percent

Pennsylvania inventory of all hogs and pigs on September 1, 2020 was 1.44 million head. This was up 14 percent from September 1, 2019, and up 1 percent from June 1, 2020, according to King Whetstone, director of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northeastern Region.

Breeding inventory, at 150,000 head, was unchanged from the previous quarter and up 25 percent from 2019.

Market hog inventory, at 1.29 million head, was up 13 percent from last year, and up 2 percent from previous quarter.

The June-August 2020 pig crop, at 622,000 head, was up 8 percent from 2019. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 56,000 head, up 10 percent from 2019. The average pigs saved per litter was 11.10 for the June-August period, compared to 11.30 the previous year.
