Pennsylvania Layer Inventory Down 4.3 Percent

Pennsylvania egg production totaled 739.0 million during August 2020, down 4.3 percent from last year. Production included 710.4 million table eggs, and 28.6 million hatching eggs.

The total number of layers during August 2020 averaged about 28.7 million, down 4.3 percent from last year. August egg production per 100 layers was 2,577 eggs, up slightly from August 2019.

United States egg production totaled 9.29 billion during August 2020, down 2% from last year. Production included 8.03 billion table eggs, and 1.26 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.17 billion were broiler-type and 85.1 million were egg-type. The average number of layers during August 2020 totaled 380 million, down 3% from last year. August egg production per 100 layers was 2,445 eggs, up 1% from August 2019.

Total layers in the United States on September 1, 2020 totaled 382 million, down 3% from last year. The 382 million layers consisted of 317 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 60.8 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 3.29 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. Rate of lay per day on September 1, 2020, averaged 77.9 eggs per 100 layers, up slightly from September 1, 2019.

Egg-type chicks hatched during August 2020 totaled 50.0 million, up 8% from August 2019. Eggs in incubators totaled 47.2 million on September 1, 2020, down 1% from a year ago.

Domestic placements of egg-type pullet chicks for future hatchery supply flocks by leading breeders totaled 370,000 during August 2020, up 91% from August 2019. Broiler-type chicks hatched during August 2020 totaled 837 million, down 2% from August 2019. Eggs in incubators totaled 690 million on September 1, 2020, down 1% from a year ago.
