Pennsylvania Dairy Farmers Volunteer at Milk Drives
Pennsylvania Ag Connection - 09/21/2020

Last week, Western Pennsylvania dairy farmers participated in two milk drives that distributed nearly 2,000 gallons of milk to families in need. Amerian Dairy Association North East worked with USDA-approved vendors, Schneider's Dairy and community organizations to use the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) government-funded grants that continue to make it possible for the community groups to provide the much-needed milk.

Dairy farmer Vickie Baker of Maple Bottom Farm, Dawson, and her children Clara and Lee, volunteered at the milk drive in Jeanette. Dairy farmer Amy Gable of Snider's Homestead Farm in New Enterprise helped distribute milk in Johnstown. She was interviewed by Altoona's WTAJ-TV.

"It was wonderful to experience the appreciation for milk in the community, especially from those who need it and understand its value," said Gable.

"We are all impacted by COVID and are truly in this together - from the farmer to the processor, the volunteers and those who accepted the milk. It's great to be able to help each other out in as many ways as possible, and I wanted to include my kids today to show them the importance of serving our community in need," noted Baker.

In total, 11 milk and food distributions were scheduled through Saturday in Pennsylvania and New York. New York families received more than 2,100 boxes of dairy foods, each weighing 20 pounds. Pennsylvanians received more than 6,800 gallons of milk.
