PMMB Increases Dairy Price by $.25 per Hundredweight
USAgNet - 03/20/2019

The Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Board (PMMB) has decided to increase the Class I over-order premium price for milk by $0.25 per hundredweight to $1 per hundredweight and continue its formula for determining the fuel adjuster add-on.

During a hearing before the PMMB earlier this month, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB) offered testimony in favor of increasing the premium by a quarter per hundredweight. PFB said the increase was needed as the price farmers are paid for the milk they produce remains low and their income over feed costs continue to fall.

"The dairy industry is in dire straits and Farm Bureau recognizes this sad fact. Pennsylvania farmers need more income from their milk, and they need it now. But there are still supply-demand challenges that exist in the regional marketplace," said Somerset County dairy farmer Glenn Stoltzfus, who is a member of PFB's State Board of Directors and chairman of its State Dairy Committee.

Farm Bureau recognized that there are many factors influencing the plight of dairy farmers across the Commonwealth and that a bump in the over-order premium will not solve all those problems.

"Given the serious needs within Pennsylvania's dairy industry, an extra 25 cent premium may help those producers whose milk qualifies for receiving the premium," added Stoltzfus.

The over-order premium and the fuel adjuster add-on mandated by PMMB are paid on Class I (fluid) milk that is produced, processed and sold entirely within Pennsylvania.

PMMB's pricing order will remain in effect through Sept. 30.
