Record-Setting Cow 'Gigi' Among Cattle Lost in Barn Fire
USAgNet - 09/21/2017

A barn fire near Brooklyn, Wisconsin, on Tuesday resulted in the loss of at least 30 head of dairy cattle, including a cow that once held the record for being the top milk producing Holstein in the world. Crews were called just before midnight to Bur-Wall Holsteins, which is a farm owned by Bob & Denise Behnke and family.

Reports say firefighters spent hours fighting the blaze. Among the animals that perished was 'Bur-Wall Buckeye Gigi,' a 10-year-old cow that set a 365-day record of 74,650 pounds of milk, with 2,126 pounds of fat and 2,142 pounds of protein in early 2016. At the time, Holstein Association USA honored her for being the all-time highest milk producer for her breed.

A total of 60 cows were inside the barn at the time of the fire, along with hay and straw. A number of neighbors helped capture the surviving animals and took them to their own farms until the facility can be rebuilt.

The barn is said to be a complete loss. Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the blaze.
